Some of us were lucky enough to be invited to help Will release the (mainly) Leach's storm petrels he was measuring, weighing and ringing as part of his PhD on the predator and prey relationship of Great Skuas and Storm Petrels. He blows the feathers in the breast area to check for signs of brood pouches which signify the bird is carrying an egg. The feathers in this case will be thinner and the veins around the area thicker to allow for greater blood flow to the egg. Apparently both males and females carry the brood pouches. Sexing of Storm Petrels is therefore not done as it is virtually impossible to tell them apart.
Leach's storm petrels prefer remote islands and only a few colonies have been found in Britain so far so it was a unique treat to be able to handle these remarkable sea birds.
