Question by ShOrTnSaSsY: If a sex offender moves to a different state do they still have to register there?

If a registered sex offender commits his crime in one state and registers there, is he required to register in another state that he might move to? Or does it only apply to the state in which the crime was committed? If they do not register what penalties in the state they move to do they face as a result? Is this a national requirement within all the states?

Yes he can move but . they must notify of their new address no later than 10 days after the move. Additionally, offenders must notify the local police department where they have moved that they are now living in that area and comply with whatever sex offender requirements exist in the new jurisdiction. Failure to do any one of these is usually a felony crime and can result in imprisonment.

Laws differ in every state - seek local legal advice as details are case specific to both the state and the type of offender
